A macabre pair of life-size face masks emerging from leather, created and signed by the late theatre set designer Yolanda Sonnabend.
Yolanda Sonnabend (1935–2015) was a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art and made her Royal Ballet debut in 1963, creating set and costume designs for Kenneth MacMillan’s Symphony. Her work spanned more than 30 years, including such works as The Nutcracker (Strasbourg), Cinderella (Lisbon), and Antony and Cleopatra with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her works held by the National Portrait Gallery include portraits Steven Berkoff and Stephen Hawking.
