A very rare Victorian wood marionette with articulated limbs. Hand-painted paper has been pasted to the wood and has eroded in some areas over time. Distress throughout gives this piece a beautiful patina. Verso is a hook for hanging and a string that can be pulled to move the limbs.
Provenance: from the Caemawr estate in Wales, home of the late Sir John Harvey-Jones MBE. He served in the Royal Navy during WW2, surviving two battleship sinkings before becoming a submarine captain at age 24. He went on the serve in Naval Intelligence during the Cold War. Afterwards, he successfully ran several businesses before starring in the BBC’s ‘Troubleshooter’ series. The show won him a BAFTA and made him one of the most well known industrialists in recent history. He became chairman of The Economist in 1989.
