A very rare religious relic feature a parchment paper with woodcut design and lettering along with a seal attaching a piece of a black veil.
The Holy House of Loreto has been a destination for international pilgrimages since the 14th century. The Shrine of Loreto allegedly preserves the Madonna's stone house which according to tradition was transported from Nazareth to Loreto in 1294. According to the ancient account of devotional and popular appeal, the house was transported there by angels. But, after more recent archaeological and philological study, it’s now thought that the house was taken to Loreto by ship – with the assistance of the angels. It is the house of Nazareth, where Mary was born, was betrothed to Joseph, received the announcement from the Angel Gabriel and conceived the Son of God.
Translation of the lettering:
Image of the Virgin of Loreto, Attestation. I, the signing guardian of the Santa Casa of Loreto, attest that the black veil which is sealed and attached to this has covered the Holy Statue of Loreto on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and afterwards touched the Holy Walls, the Holy Dress and Holy Plate of the Blessed Virgin, which are all kept in this, her Holy House. In faith etc, given at Loreto by the guardian's office on this day.
