A charming Victorian elephant made from plaster. Nodding head with hand-painted face and tusk detailing. Wood rolling balls in feet. Compartment on one side, some damage on the back behind the head. This well-loved nursery toy, like many country house items, was not replaced when it was damaged - they simply made a blanket just for him to cover up the scars. Gorgeous patina throughout. This is a much sought-after decorative piece of history and has years of life left in it.

Provenance: from the Caemawr estate in Wales, home of the late Sir John Harvey-Jones MBE. He served in the Royal Navy during WW2, surviving two battleship sinkings before becoming a submarine captain at age 24. He went on the serve in Naval Intelligence during the Cold War. Afterwards, he successfully ran several businesses before starring in the BBC’s ‘Troubleshooter’ series. The show won him a BAFTA and made him one of the most well known industrialists in recent history. He became chairman of The Economist in 1989.
