A 19th century life mask of the famous classical musician Ludwig van Beethoven, created from the original mask by Franz Klein in 1812 when Beethoven was 42 years old. The process required Beethoven’s face to be covered with oil and then fluid plaster. Throughout the process, Beethoven could only breathe through two straws inserted into his nostrils.
