A striking antique handpainted metal shield, depicting the coat of arms of Appenzell, Switzerland. Believed to date to the early 20th century. Verso, a very old handwritten tag states "Appenzell, 1513". Beautiful patina and wear throughout, with some minor rusting. Modern holes made for mounting.
The coat of arms of Appenzell is based on that of the Abbot of St. Gallen, who was the feudal lord of Appenzell until 1403. The flag of the abbey shows a rampant bear on a yellow field. 1513 is the year that Appenzell joined the Old Swiss Confederacy as the thirteenth canton.
