First Edition, Scarce. A fascinating book by Thomas P. Hunt, radical reformer seeking temperance at all levels and espousing total abstinence from alcohol. One review of his work states "The writer of these volumes endeavours to persuade all men every where to embrace the doctrine of total abstinence...if he succeeds, there will be no drunkards. He has done much to rescue the slaves of strong drink...and has earned the title of 'The Drunkard's Friend' (The Protestant Quarterly, vol. IV, no. 1, January, 1847, p. 95). Includes multiple illustrations of drunkenness with skeletal figures warning of its result.
8vo (Small). Publisher's dark brown cloth with blind stamp design to front cover. Gilt lettering and elaborate design on spine features florals and birds. Corners bumped, wear and small chipping to top and bottom of spine. Pencil marks and old owner's mark to pastedown. Some foxing to title page and frontispiece. Internal pages unmarked with occasional light foxing. Binding still very tight. Overall a very good copy of this scarce work.
