HL289
A stunning mahogany entomology cabinet. Great storage space inside. Hand-painted advertisement on exterior left for "James Gardner, Natural History Depot". On exterior right, a mounted iron plaque depicting the British Royal Coat of Arms, beneath that hand-painted lettering stating "By Appointment to H.R.M. Queen Victoria, Furrier and Plumassier, Artificial Human Eyes, also For Birds and Animals". This is a one-off piece created for advertising the Gardner business.
James Gardner was based at Oxford Street, London. According to the National Trust, which has mounted birds by James Gardner Senior, it seems that James Gardner Junior was included within this 'family' license. The family held royal warrants for 'Her Majesty the Queen Victoria, The Royal Families of England and France and HH The Khedive of Egypt'.
