A large oil portrait of Queen Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, c.1918. She is dressed in a fine gown and is cradling the head of Rasputin, who died in 1916. Grigori Rasputin was a Siberian starets (faith healer) who arrived in St Petersburg around 1904. He became an important friend and spiritual advisor to the Romanov family, particularly Tsarina Alexandra. Rumours about their relationship and Rasputin's ill conduct would contribute to the downfall of the Romanovs.
Framed in giltwood. Verso are a few small patches from repair.
